Junior Cricket
Since its inception over four years ago, one of the main aims of the PCU has been to foster the game of cricket in Phuket, particularly in educational establishments. The Committee quickly recognised the need for a Junior Development program in order to ensure the continued growth of the game of cricket on the island. As such, systems have been put in place at the grass roots level which will enable the PCU to achieve this goal.
At the moment, there is a Sawadee League being run which is similar to the Kanga Cricket program in Australia. The main aim of this competition is to increase the base of junior cricketers on the island along with promoting fun & team-work.On top of this there is a regular hard-ball competition played every week where the more serious & competent Junior players can improve their skills. This program provides a clear pathway from the Sawadee comptetion to the Senior League and ultimately into the Thai National sides.
Aside from two Level 1 & one Level 2 coach residing on the island, the PCU also supports 5 local teachers who have taken up the sport & introduced it to their respective schools. These ‘cricket ambassadors’ are active in coaching, organising tournaments and events and liaising with government sports programs at a grass roots level.
It has been clear from the success of these development programs and the eagerness with which cricket is played that there is massive potential for the growth of the game in Phuket. This potential is seemingly limited only by the ability of the PCU to keep pace with the expanding demand for resources.
