Patong Cricket Club Vs Phuket Development Cricket Club
31 January, 2010 – In another show of strength today, the Patong Cricket Club gave indication that they intend to challenge for the title in this years Island Furniture Cricket League by setting the leagues highest batting score in history with a stunning 406 runs.
Coach, Nifty Catts and his team of U’19’s local Thai kids can be very proud of their efforts though as they are clearly improving with each hit out that they have and their experience being gained playing in this years senior league will be invaluable when competing against their piers in the U19’s Tournament.
Patong, one of the most social teams in the competition, showed true sporting spirit by switching their batting line up around with tail enders finding themselves in unfamiliar surroundings opening the bat. This tactic might have to be used again as gun bowler Anil Rawat smashed a solid 75 runs to start well, however the two next batsmen were dismissed quickly for only 12 giving the youngsters a sniff of a chance at taking out a victory.
However, hopes were reduced when paceman Joshi Naresh arrived and also notched up a quick 57 followed by Man of the Match John Whetton hitting 16 boundaries and 80 runs before being given out LBW to young gun Pup.
The innings was finished off well by Ian Lenton and Richard Folds both reaching their half centuries with 51 runs apiece before captain Raju Seemant declared the innings at 33.4 overs.
Bowling for the PDCC was excellent with Pup shining taking 4 wickets including the two high scorers John Whetton and Anil Rawat.
With an extremely high target, the PDCC openers started well by scoring freely off the first couple of overs including a very good four to Duang. Not long after though, the experience of spinner Martin Foster showed through with 2 quick wickets putting pressure on the batting team.
Took once again showed her skills with the bat playing a variety of defensive as well as some aggressive shots reaching the boundary. Other good performances were made by Bank, Mack, Pao Pup Aon Bill, First and Non with Aon, Pup and Bill all staying at the crease for long periods of time and scoring well.
In the man of the match stats, John Whettons 80 runs and some good wicket keeping was enough to take the 3 points, Anil Rawat received 2 points and 1 point went to Pup for his 4 wickets and excellent batting.
Laguna Cricket Club Vs Liquid Lounge Lizards
Round 5 of the Island Furniture Cricket League saw two very competitive teams fight out an extremely high scoring and enjoyable match.
The toss was won by the Laguna boys and they chose to bat first. This proved a wise decision with the warm temperatures cooled off in the morning by some breeze which soon dropped after lunch.
They also managed to rack up a large run total of 302 runs with Alex Booth just missing his ton scoring 90 runs before being caught of some fine bowling by Sean Raine. Other high scorers were Fayzan Hamid with 40 not out, Damian Clowes 38 and Sameer Kahn with 36.
With such a large total in the bag, nobody at the ground thought it possible that the Liquid Loungers could make a game of it but the opening pair of Dave Langly and P. Ferrier managed to hit the 100 mark without fall of wicket. However, their jubilation was short lived when Dave Langley was bowled the next ball for his total of 39 runs.
P. Ferrier was looking solid at the crease and after 20 overs the scores were deadlocked at 148 for each team. Could this be a record run chase by the LLL team? Unfortunately not when a change of bowlers from pace to spin saw P. Ferrier also bowled for 83 runs. Dave Kellaway managed to put up a good effort (36 runs) as did the other batsmen but the total was just too high with the result being a win to the Laguna Boys by 37 runs.
This now places the new Laguna team towards the top of the table and challenging for a finals berth at the end of the season.
Man of the match points went to: Alex Booth 3pts, Peter Ferrier 2pts and Fayzan Hamid 1 pt.
Village Cricket Club Vs Kingfisher Island Cricket Club
Game four featured last years champions and hot favourites for this years titles, the Kingfishers V’s the very social Village Club.
WIth the Village batting first the score ticked over at a reasonable rate with Arun top scoring after being bowled by Anand for 33 runs. At the end of the innings the Village had scored a credible 160 runs for the KICC to chase.
Immediately, the KICC batsmen chased well and only lost their first wicket for 68 runs with Ibrihim being decalred out LBW for 28. Summit top scored with a solid 58 not out and the total of 163 was made after only 20 overs. Comments made at the ground were that if a few more catches were held the Village would have made a better challenge at this game.
Phuket Development Cricket Club and Laguna Cricket Club start their campaigns
In a Phuket Cricket Group first, two new sides faced off for their first ever games in the Island Furniture Senior League.
PDCC, a local youth side made up of U19’s players coming through the ranks of the PCG’s Youth Development Program, lost the toss and were asked by the Laguna team to bowl first. Bank, Bill, Pup and Mack all bowled well in the day taking one wicket a piece and after their 35 overs had conceded 235 runs.
In the end, the Laguna team proved too strong for the young fellas bowling the boys out for 53 runs.
Congratulations to both teams, especially the PDCC who we all enjoyed their first senior game and we are all sure will continue to improve and enjoy more games this year. Well done boys.
