Pool Competition Fundraiser
The Phuket Cricket Union enjoyed a pool competition night at the Aussie Bar on Saturday night 14th of November.
As always, we were well looked after by our hosts, Chilla and Wayne.
It was a knockout affair and the final was a close fought contest. An Aussie import named Shayne took off the winners prize of 5000 thb defeating local Ian Lenton who took home the coveted Aussie Bar polo shirt (fortunately no one took home a bar mat).
Thanks to all that attended and to the Aussie Bar for their support.
I hope to see more of the members at the next PCU social night.

The Phuket Cricket Union’s Sportsman’s Dinner
The Phuket Cricket Union held a Sportsman’s Dinner at the Green Man Pub in Chalong on Sunday 12th April to raise funds for their Youth Development Programme. The star attraction was the renowned after dinner speaker Bob ‘The Cat’ Bevan MBE from England. Bob has appeared four times at the Footballer of the Year Dinner (a record) twice at the PFA Player of the Year Awards and at 74 of the top English football clubs. He stars in the“Great Goalkeepers Show”with Gordon Banks and Pat Jennings and has also made an LP on football humour, which has twice been featured on the British Airways Comedy Channel. He has also appeared at many professional cricketers’ benefit dinners, rugby dinners and golf days and has won several awards for services to after dinner speaking.
It turned out to be a fantastic evening with splendid food, fine wines, great company and Bob’s speech was as funny and entertaining as we all had hoped it would be with a suitable mixture of sports and anecdotes to cater to most tastes.
We managed to sell 77 places at the dinner raising 77,000 Baht for the local Thai kids’ cricket development in the process. We’d like to thank all our guests for supporting The PCU on this special evening, Howard Digby-Johns and his team for hosting the event and the PCU Committee for ensuring we filled all the places. A special thank you also needs to go to PCU member Dennis Bacon, a personal friend of Bob’s, without whom we couldn’t have landed such a prestigious entertainer.
Lastly but not least many, many thanks to ‘The Cat’ for generously donating the time to visit our wonderful island and allowing us the opportunity to raise these much needed funds to continue the successful expansion of the great game of cricket among the local Thai community.
We trust that it was an evening for all to remember fondly. Bob said he had a superb time on Phuket and we really hope he’ll come again soon.
The Phuket Cricket Union welcomes new players both young and old as well as the experienced or inexperienced. Cricket in Phuket is all about fun and enjoyment.
